El Libro d’Ore del Obispo de Morgades

In the complex spiritual panorama that sees its beginning in the thirteenth century, we observe a tendency of the faithful to appropriate the practices of piety of priests: this current originates the birth of the Books of Hours. With the aim that the exercise of private devotion should be carried out under the best possible conditions, two objects were required: a written support and an iconic representation, of which the Book of Hours of the Bishop of Morgades is a great example: in fact , brings together all the characteristics of the genre and adds a new and significant, as it enriches its original iconographic program with a series of images taken from other manuscripts. The manuscript is configured as a creative anthology of the golden age of European painting and the proposed opening allows a privileged view of the evolution of the miniatory decoration, in fact the illustrations began to acquire, in this period, an extraordinary importance as a complement of the texts : in the case of this book of hours, two groups of images of different origins were added in order to increase their value. This manuscript, dating back to the early 1500s, includes 55 parchment cards, corresponding to 110 pages entirely illustrated, of which: 4 full page miniatures, 1410 ca .; 30 full-page miniatures from the beginning of 1500; 70 pages with text and decorations on the margins. The original, with the signature No. 88, is kept in the Episcopal de Vic Library (Spain). 2nd Prize in 2010 granted by the Ministry of Culture to the best book edited in the category of Facsimile Books. Limited edition of 995 numbered copies and certified by notary deed
