Leicester Codex

It is a manuscript comprising 72 sheets, dating between 1506 and 1510. Unique to Leonardo’s codes, it is now owned by Bill Gates. The main theme is the collection of plumbing studies and water regulation of the Arno, carried out by the master Da Vinci: the research focuses mainly on the mechanism of water scales, or on the slowing action of its fall demonstrated by the master in the meadows of the Sforzesca, at the Mulino della Scala in Vigevano. The manuscript was found in Rome in 1690 by the painter Giuseppe Grezzi in an old trunk, which guarded it until 1717, when Thomas Coke, Count of Leicester bought it, and kept it in his country-house in Holkham Hall.

In the twentieth century the code was sold again to a rich American oilman named Armand Hammer, making the code also acquire the name of “Hammer Code”. Subsequently, in 1994, as anticipated, the code went into the custody of Microsoft’s founder, Bill Gates, for 30.8 million dollars. Italy, the land of origin of the Leicester Code, will be honored to offer the exhibition of this work starting from October 29, 2018, in the exhibition “The Leicester Code of Leonardo da Vinci. The Water Microscope of Nature “, at the Uffizi of Florence.
